Nursery

As most of you know, I’m expecting a baby this July! I’ve got to say, preparing the nursery has been one of my favorite parts so far. I know I enjoy painting & decorating, but there’s just something about having the freedom to be more ‘playful’ with your designs that made this unique for me!

I’ve never been into the color pink. Don’t get me wrong, soft pinks make very sweet clothing etc, but an entire room in pink wasn’t exactly my vision for the nursery. My goal was to create an imaginative space that would inspire creativity & be fun with sweet little girly touches...

I took my inspiration from the singing flowers in Disney’s classic cartoon, “Alice in Wonderland”. I had previously selected the wall’s base-color when we were building. The color is a soft muted blue/green. It reminds me of Tiffany’s blue, but more toned down. Loving the wall’s base-color, I had to make the flowers subtler than they appeared in the 1951 film. My palette consisted of all muted colors, which in my eyes gave me a vintage feel. I’ve really had a thing for vintage design lately....Anyway, to keep everything feeling light & working together, I tried to use touches of white in each painting.

My husband & I have collected different pieces of furniture, so we wanted to use as much of the items that we already had as we could. Most of the items we had were darker wood tones. So, while selecting the crib, I wanted to make sure we picked a contrasting wood tone – so it would stand out as a focal point as well as give the room an eclectic feeling.

The flowers were painted on the lower half of the wall so that our baby can enjoy them during play times. The tree is a focal point of the room. I carried that up higher to give our baby something to look at while falling sleeping.

While creating this special space, I did research & learned that babies first see in black & white/high contrasts & only things very close up. As their eyes develop they’ll see more & more color further away-interesting, huh? (leave it to me to google how babies see color!) In the beginning our baby will be in the bassinet so I plan to paint a high contrasting canvas grouping to hang on the wall above the bassinet in our room, but I’m hoping as her eyes develop, she’ll be able to slowly discover & enjoy her nursery more & more!

The rooms not quite finished, as we haven’t had our baby’s shower yet, but check out the images below & let me know what you think?.... I’m wondering how long till she ‘tells’ me she wants me to paint over the whole thing!

I plan to put curtains at the opening of the recessed space by the windows rather than directly in front of the windows. That way that little nook can be like a tent/fort when she gets older. I'm thinking something very sheer-white or buttery yellow for the fabric.

Here is a rocker from my mom & dad's house that I remember climbing up in when I was little.

I have a verse I'm going to add to one of the tree's branches-

Little Blue Bird.

DOG & CAT-apillars :)
