My Not-So-Green Thumb

My parents live on an acre of land in West St. Louis county, and it is absolutely gorgeous. Over the years they have spent countless hours landscaping, planting flowers, and tending gardens; their children (that would be me and my sister) had to spend a good portion of their summer weeding, mulching, raking, and getting incredibly dirty. It wasn’t too much fun back then, but slowly my attitude has changed.

Now that I’m all grown up and on my own, I get these strange urges to dig and plant things and watch them grow. It’s a shame that I kill most everything green. I’ve tried to fill my condo balcony with little colorful lovelies, but they die. Sometimes they die quickly, and I blame wherever I bought them from because clearly that can’t be my fault. Sometimes they die slowly and painfully, and I try to blame the lack of sun on my porch, or the Chicagoland winds. But I’m just cursed with a less-than-green thumb.

One day I will get a house with a yard and (hopefully) tend it as well as my parents have tended theirs. It’s going to be very difficult for me, so I have to start easy. I’ve come up with a few flowers that I love, that spread quickly, and are hard to kill. They are also perennial, so I don’t have to replant every year. So for the wonderful day when I have a yard and flower gardens and my own gardening equipment, here are the flowers I will plant first:

Irises

Day Lilies

Hydrangeas

Hostas

Got any great flower ideas for someone like me?
