Taking a Look Back

Every year about this time, I take a look back at all of the things I have created over the last year. I do this for a couple of reasons. First, I like to look over the progress I have made in the last year from vision to execution, things rarely end up where you think they will at the start. I also like to get a broad view of how my style has changed over the last year, what is new and different, old things that faded out. Sometimes I even notice ideas popping up in my work that I didn't explore fully and might want to re-evaluate in the new year. And then there is the favorite. Every year, I have a favorite thing that I worked on in the past year.

This last year was a special year for me. I pushed myself hard and grew a lot as an artist. Thanks to hard work, and Kyle, my partner-in-crime, I managed to book two gallery shows in 2010, and a new one in 2011.

This year was all about limitations for me. What can you do when you limit your options?

This piece is acrylic paint on Russian birch. Titled This Isn't Child's Play, it is from my March and July collaborative installation with Kyle, "Passive-Agressive." Part of a series of four where I pushed the limits of what I could do with a stencil. Each piece of the image is hand cut and laid on the wood.

I always have a favorite. Each and every year I do one piece that for whatever reason shines more in my eyes than all of my other works from that year. This piece qualifies as that - it's my favorite!
