It turns out, not only are there more popular pieces, but Tyler Green, over at ArtNotes did a series on the most popular pieces at several of our nation's finest museums.
Here's a quick review of the top of the lists:
- Museum of Modern Art, NYC - Salvador Dali, The Persistence of Memory
- Guggenheim, NYC - Richard Serra, Torqued Spiral (Right Left)
- Art Institute Chicago, Chicago - Grant Wood, American Gothic
- Indianapolis Museum of Art, Indianapolis - Tim Hawkinson, Mobius Ship
- Museum of Modern Art, SF - Henri Matisse, Woman With a Hat

Edward Hopper, Nighthawks
I have spent a lot of time working with and around art. Enough time that I have favorite artists, and styles which I seek out. One of the best ways to discover new and exciting art to love is to look at what other people are looking at. Go and see art at your local museum or gallery, go to an art event. As you look at more and more art, you will have a much better taste for what you like!
