I was looking forward to the show, but to be honest, I wasn’t sure what to expect, I mean, a show with no talking… this might be odd. I wondered if Jason would like it, and if I would even understand it.
On the way there my Jason asked me on a scale of one to ten how excited I was. I said, "Eh, 6 or 7, because I’m not sure how it’ll be to watch something with no talking/singing." "THERE’S NO TALKING?!" Jason replied.
There’s something special about seeing people dressed up flocking to the same building to enjoy an evening show. As we walked in, I was in awe over the ornate ceilings of the The Auditorium Theater. I noticed the stairs were worn which visually told the tale of how many people have frequented this beautiful theater year after year (it opened in 1889!). There was a strong presence of history just being there.
It was a relief when Jason and I flipped through the playbill to see that each act had a synopsis. Ahhh, we no longer had to worry about figuring this thing out!
The music began, the lights dimmed and my heart was suddenly filled with excitement. We had front row seats in the balcony, so we could see everything, but what I was most impressed by was how you could hear the patter of their shoes striking the floor! I am pleased to say that the choreography was so in tune with the script that I honestly don’t think we would have needed the synopsis. Sure, we wouldn’t have known the characters names without it, but it was moving to see how well you can communicate through your body/dance. There was even humor in the ballet! All I could think was these dancers are at work right now, wow! I like my job and everything, but can you imagine getting paid to dance? ~What a dream~
On the ride home Jason asked what my rating was & I quickly said 10+. Turns out he knows me better than I know myself and I’m so grateful that we got to experience our first Ballet together! If you are sheepish at the thought of going to a ballet, don’t be, it honestly is a great experience!
