Creative Solutions for Tricky Situations

The other day, the Indianapolis Museum of Art talked about some of the problems that come up when you try to display delicate, heavy or otherwise unique things. So What if It Doesn't Fit? takes us through the steps of designing and building mounts for three different pieces that are currently being displayed in Material World at the IMA.

The article caught my eye, because just as in the museum world, framing often involves coming up with creative solutions for some tricky situations! Here are a few examples of innovation from our framing team over the years.

First up is a local attorney who wanted to frame her diploma, and keep the leather folio that it came in. We used mylar straps inside the folio to hold it in place inside of the frame, and at the same time give it the appearance of floating.

Next up is a client who had some antique clay marbles. She wanted to showcase them in a playful way, without permanently attaching anything to them or damaging their value. We used a combination of shallow mat cuts and water-based adhesive that doesn't do any damage to the marbles.

Lastly, here is a self-described Beatles junkie who wanted some good quality framing to protect her collection. We used specially made metal mounts to hold the records in such a way as to keep them up in the frame without damaging them, or permanently attaching anything to them.
